A simple 1–9 ranking of how bright your night sky is — and how to use it to pick a better observing site.

The Bortle scale rates night-sky brightness from 1 (excellent dark-sky site) to 9 (inner-city sky). Lower numbers mean darker skies, more stars, and a better chance to see the Milky Way’s structure with the naked eye. It is a practical field language, not a lab instrument reading — maps and apps estimate it from satellite light-pollution data and local context.

Treat neighboring classes as a relative ladder: moving from 7 toward 4 often matters more than chasing a perfect Class 1 on an unsafe or unreachable road.
City vs rural: what changes
City and bright suburbs wash out faint stars and the Milky Way band. You can still enjoy planets, the Moon, bright constellations, and many ISS passes — just set expectations.
Rural and darker corridors restore contrast. The same clear forecast that feels “okay” downtown can feel spectacular twenty to sixty minutes away from highway and town glow.
