Say which way and how high, in fists or hand-spans at arm's length. Get the planet, bright star, ISS or comet it could be, for your place and minute in Guyana time.
Frequently asked questions
What is the bright star I see in the evening?
Often a planet: Venus, Jupiter, Saturn or Mars shine steadily, while stars twinkle. Pick the direction you are facing and how many fists up it is, and the page names the planet, bright star, ISS or comet that is there at that minute from your place.
How do I measure height with my hand?
Hold your arm out straight. A closed fist covers about 10 degrees of sky and a hand-span, thumb tip to little-finger tip spread wide, about 25. Nine fists, or three and a half hand-spans, reach from the horizon to straight overhead. Children's hands and arms grow together, so the rule works for them too.
Why does it not use my phone compass?
Phone compasses are a common complaint on sky-map apps and can point the wrong way entirely, especially near metal. A compass point you know, or where the Sun went down, is good enough to tell the bright things apart.
Why is nothing listed in the daytime?
With the Sun up the sky is too bright for the stars and planets this page names, so it lists nothing and says so. A bright point in a daylight sky is most often an aircraft catching the sunlight.
