Was the 21 August 2017 solar eclipse total in Guyana?

Solar eclipse · Monday 21 August 2017

The verdict for Guyana

It was visible from all of Guyana as a partial eclipse: 39% of the Sun covered at Aishalton to 56% at Mabaruma.

At Georgetown it began at 2:48 pm GYT, was greatest at 3:58 pm GYT with the Sun a third of the way up in the west, and ended at 5:00 pm GYT.

Times shown in Guyana time (UTC-4, no daylight saving).

Eye safety

Never look straight at the Sun, at any moment of a partial eclipse, without eclipse glasses or a hand-held solar viewer made to the ISO 12312-2 standard. Sunglasses, smoked glass, exposed film and phone screens do not protect your eyes. Never look through binoculars, a telescope or a camera without a solar filter fitted to the front, even while wearing eclipse glasses. A pinhole projection is safe: stand with your back to the Sun and look at the image on a card, never through the hole. Supervise children.

What was said, and what we found

It is SAFE to view the sky at 15:58hrs when the eclipse is in totality, that is, when the moon entirely covers the sun’s light from reaching the earth.

Guyana Chronicle (staff article), read through the Internet Archive. “Total solar eclipse tomorrow”, published 20 August 2017. Read the source, fetched 14 October 2026.

The claim is wrong, and the advice in it was unsafe. From Georgetown the Moon covered at most 54% of the Sun, at 3:58 pm GYT: a partial eclipse, so there was no moment when it was safe to look without eclipse glasses. The times it printed were right: 2:48 pm to 5:00 pm GYT.
