The verdict for Guyana

It was visible from all of Guyana as a partial eclipse: 57% of the Sun covered at Mabaruma to 71% at Aishalton.

At Georgetown it began at 1:28 pm GYT, was greatest at 3:05 pm GYT with the Sun a third of the way up in the west, and ended at 4:28 pm GYT.

Times shown in Guyana time (UTC-4, no daylight saving).

Eye safety

Never look straight at the Sun, at any moment of a partial eclipse, without eclipse glasses or a hand-held solar viewer made to the ISO 12312-2 standard. Sunglasses, smoked glass, exposed film and phone screens do not protect your eyes. Never look through binoculars, a telescope or a camera without a solar filter fitted to the front, even while wearing eclipse glasses. A pinhole projection is safe: stand with your back to the Sun and look at the image on a card, never through the hole. Supervise children.

What was said, and what we found

The umbral shadow of the moon is calculated to begin covering the sun at 13:28:55 in Georgetown, and at 13:32:33 in Aishalton.

A reader’s letter in Stabroek News. “Partial solar eclipse on Saturday afternoon”, published 10 October 2023. Read the source, fetched 14 October 2026.

The claim is right. Right to within 12 seconds: we compute 13:28:53 at Georgetown and 13:32:21 at Aishalton for the start, and the eclipse begins later in the south. At greatest eclipse the Moon covers 59% of the Sun at Georgetown and 71% of the Sun at Aishalton.
